Chilean CB radio scene

Chile is a long country on the far en of south america our neigbors are Peru and Bolivia at our north , Argentina at the East and the Antartica at the south , my country is identified as 32 division on the CB and for the hams Our preffix is CE , CA ,CD , Being XQ the highest category with less than 300 hams on the country with that license , CB requires license , and the maximium LEGAL power level are 12 watts SSB and 4 watts on AM , but who cares , you can buy an A 100 watt AMP for just 35000 pesos its like 80 USD , CB is used here by Truckers , Fishers , and even on some small towns as primary comunication way by the firebrigades and munipalities , Some Navy litoral (something like USCG) units also use CB to talk with the fisheries , taxi cabs and Propane selling trucks are also on cb , here SSB is the Rule 98 % percent of the traffic is on SSB , Truckers use the CH30 USB , Most of locals Are QAP on CH29 USB , DX freqs are 27.455 USB , 27.555 USB . We have even a REACT Style Net on at 8 pm everyday at CH9 USB its called Red nacional de proteccion civil (National civil protection net) control stations are required to have big stations with HF and VHF capabilities to handle emergency traffic to other agencies like Onemi (like US FEMA) , we hear the superbowl loud on CH6 AM all day long with S9 signals , most of cbers use export radios and HF transceivers , a big station here consist of a ham rig conected to a 5/8 wave vertical , antron a99 are starting to apear and also RM italy , Most of the serious CBers are also hams here , freebanding is popular also , the national Pirate calling freq on 40 meters is 6993khz , there are many cbers using Transverters to operate on that freqs , you can get an italian board for 40000 pesos around 90 usd to talk on 40 meters , 20 is also popular especially 14760khz , most of the traffic is trucker stuff , many Escuderias (Truck companies) are installing HF transceiver on the trucks , ive seen Kenwood TS120 TRC 70 , Icoms 718 ,IC7000 and 706 on trucks , yaesus FT 80C , 897D and also 857 .

Who remembers The CB radio craze , i was a kid but i lived the end of that era , the 90's , Cellphones were expensive, my oldest brother had a CB radio on his truck , i have one on my house , he was in the south , i still remember mi first contact with CB radio , i grew listening to marine Vhf radios, by the time i was 7 i wanted to talk but i wasnt able to do that on VHF , so my father gave me a CB radio , it was a realistic AM , it had 40 channels , shortly after that i found some locals that talked on the Channel 13 , it was Marcelo Kolibri and Cesar Razek, Marcelo had a Alan 87 cb with SSB , and Cesar a Uniden PC244 , they talked about Metal , they still have a band Called Ophanims , Marcelo influenced my music tastes a lot , i was 9 and i was starting lo listen Ozzy and Iron maiden , some nights in summer we used to comment the Viña del mar music festival , it was funny to hear the comments about artists on the radio , by the time i was 11 years old i was building my first quality made dipoles that were hung from a tree to the house , my father bought my in a trip to the north a Cobra 19DXII a nice and small radio, i met Don Luis Anacleto el Alacalufe , whom is still on CB , he knew a lot about electronics and antennas i still remember when i taked notes about everything that he tought me , by when i was 11 i was on 6th grade , i had a lot of contacts with stations from Peru and Brasil , some of my classmates couldnt believe it , so a day when they came to my house i showed them my radio room , that contained a Sony shortwave conected to a long wire , a President CB handheld that Marcelo sold me , the cobra CB and the realistic CB , a handheld radioshack scanner , A marine band VHF a power supply , a car battery , and a couple of car bulbs , those were nice times , i remember making skip contacts on AM on the morning before going to school , by the time i was 13 as propagation faded my interest in radio was halted a bit , i started dating , i got a girlfriend and i was short of time , by the time i was 14 i received a call from marcelo , he was again on radio , but he was on FRS radio , i picked the radioshack catalog and i ordered two 15 miles units with a charger and a base scanner , my brother brought them to Chile , the day they arrived , the first thing i made was to modify the FRS radio , i pick my soldering iron and i carrefully removed the original antenna in place of the antenna i put a BNC conector connected to a UHF groundplane antenna on the roof ,so i kept talking with marcelo on UHF , we even mounted a simplex repeater on UHF , it lasted a couple of months working, by that time i started to listen the local repeater 147.300 , i listened a ham that was called Eduardo XQ2BNZ , he was retired , most of his conversation were about technical subjects , then a day i listened that radioclub valparaiso was holding an event called pasando y pasando , i went i personally meet XQ2BNZ, we talked about radio , and he ended convincing me to take the test and became a ham , i did it i got my first license CD2895 by that time i had a group of fellow pirate friends the i managed to convice them to became hams , so we take the test together , and aproved it , i dont remember how exactly we started to talk on 146.120 on the nights , the original group of pirates was now talking and acting like hams ! , i mean techniclly inclined pirates , when we were pirates we were building directional antennas and making point to point FRS links , so we installed a new antenna on the house a Ringo antenna with 6db on VHF , i was able to talk around 50 miles around my house , then Don Eduardo convinced me that True hams are on HF bands , so i started to save to get a HF rig , i choose a TS-50 radio , small enough to fit in a briefcase , but sturdy , i bought it from CE3PPE , who brought it from santiago specially , we calibrated the SWR of my 40 meter dipole ,and i started to make contacts , the rest is history .............

Homebrew HT antennas

Did the dog chew your HT antenna ? was stolen by space aliens? or you simply lost it ? , well this will make you feel a bit of relief concerning that , i finally designed an portable radio antenna that works and it wont blow your finals, works on UHF and VHF , and the design is very versatile , there are no hard to find pieces , i can bet you that you have 95% of the required materials on your junkbox ,
you will need :
Cianocrilate glue aka Loctite
-1 BNC conector
-a piece of 20 cm of enameled wire awg 15 will do the job or small electric conection cable ,doorbell wire

-a 5 cm long tube of 8 to 9 mm diameter
-heath shrink tube

-25 cm of RG 58 coax

- small drill or dremel like tool
- soldering iron , solder , cutters , etc

sheffield pocket knife review

I bought a month ago a sheffield foldable pocket knife , this isnt a spring assisted knife , but cames with a dot lock , safe enough for everyday carry , steel is fairly hard , cames in black color , with a cammo plastic handle , i havent found any problems , i just learned how to flick it using my thumb finger as aid for the unlocking mechanism.

Your First toolbox

As survivalist you will need to reapair your own equipment , vehicles , generators , farm equipment , guns , etc , for that you will need four things , First of all Common sense , Spare parts , and your toolbox that contains all the things that you need to use to make a repair . Lets start talking about the toolbox perse , your toolbox must light , but strong enough to resist the wear an tear of everyday carry on your vehicle , plastic boxes are ok but with the time they will suffer the destruction of the lock and the handles , wood is also ok , especially if is made in the form of a transit case , but the better is a Surplus 50 cal Ammo Box , they are watertight , and moisture tight , are virtually indestructible , and are very cheap you can find them on stores for low as $10USD here in chile $5000Pesos ,you can place inside a piece of foam to avoid the metal to metal noise .

What tools do I need ?
For A Mechanic/Car/Generator toolbox you will need :

- A pair of pliers
- A set of screwdrivers (don't save on this items get the best ones you can afford)

- A monkey wrench
- A Allen and torx wrench set (this is specially important if you own newer vehicles)
- Adjustable hand wrenches at least two
- A set of fixed hand wrenches at least 20 of them of common SAE* sizes
- A Socket wrench set (52 pieces ones are the minimium )
- A Ball pein Hammer
- WD-40 (Not recommended for Gunsmitting )
- A locking plier
- A Hemosthat ( Yep the medical one , useful for clamping fuel lines)
- A small flashlight
- A Spark plug Socket (Newer spark plugs are 17 mm but dont throw away the 21mm one )
- Plastic zip ties and a bit of wire
- Duct tape
Once you have bought your tools , take a fine brush and cover them with a thing layer of oil , this will keep the moisture away from them .

I built today a test version of the tuner over a pine board , and it worked , not so wonderful but works im thinking in modifying it .
The shunt feed system works well , but on 40 meter i cant reach a 1:1 SWR , and on 10 meters my lowest SWR is infinite , the band that worked better was 30 meters with a 1,2:1 SWR .

A purely teorical multiband Antenna Whip

I borrowed this design from AA3SJ , tomorrow i will make some tests with this design, its basically a shunt feed whip , with capacitive coupling , i will use an ELECNA Multitap inductor and some air variable caps , and i will use a 3 meter long PVC pipe as whip .

Generadores Bauker :Un Review , algunos tips y su mantencion

Hace un tiempo atras decidi comprar un generador , encontre uno que satisfaciera mis nescesidades , o por lo menos las tres b , bueno , bonito (tal vez , nunca tanto como un Honda),Barato (Pero no de mala calidad) , se pueden encontrar generadores muy baratos de dos tiempos , bencineros de cuatro (los cuales son mas caros) y diesel (sobre los $300.000) , otro tema son las mantenciones . elegi uno bencinero de cuatro tiempos , 1100 watts peak , de uso livianos solo para darme cuenta de que este era un clon chino de un Honda rebrandeado, no es malo. pero vamos a lo medular de esto punto a punto.

*Bencinero : pros : facil de reparar , puede correr con casi cualquier bencina desde 80 octanos hacia arriba incluso he probado con 97 octanos , en el papel con propano o incluso hidrogeno , no nescesita mezcla de bencina con aceite , son mas limpios , no queman aceite , los motores usan repuestos faciles de conseguir , no hay bujia incandesente , solo una bujia comun y corriente de las cortas de moto de cuatro ruedas , cambiable un 5 minutos .
Contras : La bencina es mucho mas INFLAMABLE que el Diesel o la mescla .

*Diesel : pros : el diesel es mas seguro no se inflama tan rapido como la bencina ni con tanta facilidad , la gran mayoria tienen motores de partida un solo toque de un boton y parten .
contras : son un poco mas sucios , la mantencion es mas dificil .
contras : no es muy facil de reparar , el diesel es un poco mas contaminante .

*Mescla: Basicamente un motor de cortadora de pasto o motosierra conectada a un cabezal de generador , Sucio , no tienen carter , se lubrican con la mescla de bencina y aceite , el cual se quema junto con la bencina , algo muy sucio , (a real mess to work with ) como dicen .

Despues de comprarlo lo traje a casa , llene el estanque de bencina , IMPORTANTE LLENAR EL CARTER CON ACEITE ! VIENE VACIO , ALGUNOS MODELOS NO PARTEN SIN ACEITE (LO CUAL ES BUENO ) OTROS SI DAÑANDO EL BLOCK PARA SIEMPRE ! llene el carter con aceite SAE 10w40 un buen aceite para el clima local aunque el fabricante recomienda 5w30 pero es mas dificil de encontrar , lo encendi umm interesante el voltimetro marca 250 volts , un poco alto para correr cosas directamente desde el , probe cargandolo , un par de ampolletas de 100 watts 240 segun el voltimetro del generador 248 segun mi tester , tuve que ajustar el gobernador , hasta dejarlo en 230 volts , y alrededor de 70 HZ ,OJO No intentes correr una UPS desde un generador , Nunca entregara una frecuencia pareja sino que variara con la carga , haciendo que la UPS Conmute de forma erratica , una vez ajustado lo corri una hora bajo carga ,
ningun problema , lo guarde en un cobertiso en el patio , un dia de sol me senti un intenso olor a bencina el tanque de bencina rebalsaba , como , el calor habia expandido la bencina , a tres veces su volumen original NUNCA LO LLENES HASTA ARRIBA , NUNCA MAS ARRIBA QUE LA MITAD DEL ESTANQUE , NO LA MITAD DEL MEDIDOR QUE EN REALIDAD ES LLENO , EL INDICADOR NO ES FIABLE ! saque un poco de la bencina y sigui guardado , una vez a la semana lo corria un rato para que no se agripara , hasta hace 3 semanas .

Dos dias lloviendo torrencial con viento , se corta la energia ( Eso no es nuevo aqui) me levanto del escritorio y reviso el panel de fusibles , ninguno caido (WTF) salgo al patio mi vecino tenia luz , bueno sera la Fase mi otro vecino no tenia luz , camino hasta el medidor , el fusible del medidor estaba caido lo subo , 5 minutos cae denuevo , comienzo a revisar los ductos y resulta que varios de ellos estaban inundados , he ahi el problema , prendi el generador para terminar mi trabajo , cargar mi laptop , y encender la tele , a eso de las 12 de la noche lo apague .

Dia 1 : ya no llueve , son las 9:30 pm , prendemos el generador para cargar herramientas , equipos de comunicaciones y celulares , restaurar un poco el banco de baterias por si el generador fallaba . se aisla la falla esta en una seccion de tuberias de 40 metros de largo , se decide desconectarla , y cablearla denuevo por via aerea , eso significa poner postes . 15:30 se apaga el generador , lleva 6 horas corriendo , el cabezal generador esta un poco tibio , decido cambiar el aceite , sale claro y sin chips metalicos , en perfecto esta indicacion de que podria resistir muchas horas mas por lo menos unas 12 mas , recargo combustible y me dirigo a comprar cable y materiales para disponerme a seguir trabajando al otro dia , vuelvo a eso de las 19:30 a la casa esta obscuro , prendo mi linterna y entro , prendo el generador , y pongo un poco de iluminacion con el fin de poder mejorar mi situacion tactica un poco logro iluminar los espacios vitales , prender las camaras de seguridad, y volver a cargar el banco de baterias maniobra terminada a las o1:00 pm .
Dia 2: 8:00 me levanto , desayuno junto con los empleados , y comenzamos la faena a eso de las 9:00 primero habia que cablear , el generador lo prendemos a eso de las 10 para cortar madera y comenzar a poner los postes , a los 950 watts se chupa un poco con la sierra , pero todavia es usable , la faena termina a las 21:00 todos cansados preparamos un barbecue para pasar el frio y alimentarnos un poco , generador apagado a las 22:00 casi 15 horas de uso continuo y todavia ningun problema .
Dia 3: el dia comienza como los otros se cambia el aceite y noto en el piso del cobertizo un charco de combustible , el calor del motor habia expandido la manguera de combustible y habia perdido cerca de litro y medio , saque la manguera , la limpie , y la instale denuevo utilizando amarras plasticas , problema solucionado , 10:00 pm arrancamos denuevo , 16:00 se reporta por radio de que el generador comensaba a perder fuerza y a tener problemas de combustion , ordeno que sea apagado , espero que se enfrie , mi experiencia me decia que 1, podia faltar oxigeno , 2 problema de bujia , revise reajuste la bujia y vuala corria bien denuevo . lo apagamos a las 23:00 con la faena terminada y la energia restablecida .

Total combustible :16 litros
Total aceite : 1 litro

Cosas que aprendimos : El calor es nuestro mayor enemigo , los dolores de cabeza fueron causados por el calo y la expansion de los materiales , El enchufe original del generador es MALO , cambialo apenas puedas tiende a quebrarse con la vibracion del motor , bujias en buen estado significan motores mas estables , y sin ruidos . No puedes tener un generador si no tienes las suficientes habilidades mecanicas ni los insumos y las herramientas , NUNCA LO CORRAS EN UN LUGAR CERRADO , EMITE MONOXIDO DE CARBONO Y TE MATARA DE ASFIXIA , DURA LECCION DEL HURACAN KATRINA MUCHA GENTE TUVO ESTE PERCANCE ! , TEN UN EXTINTOR A MANO , (EL TANQUE DE COMBUSTIBLE ESTA ARRIBA DEL MOTOR ) .

CONCLUSION: No es un mal generador , pero requiere mantenimiento , no es dificil.

CAMBIAR EL ACEITE CADA 12 HORAS Alargara la vida util del motor .
